Wireless Communities Georgia

Funding Awarded for Local Wireless Networks

Three communities were selected January 16, 2008, to receive funding in the second round of grants through the Wireless Communities Georgia (WCG) program.  Savannah, Statesboro and Hapeville were awarded funding for proposed wireless networks within their communities.

WCG provides funding to local governments to build wireless networks in their communities.  Wireless connectivity allows users to access the Internet through personal computers, personal digital assistants and other wireless devices.

“We are seeing real progress in communities that received awards last year, and I am pleased to be able to continue the funding this year to promote economic development, education and greater government efficiency in these additional communities,” said Governor Sonny Perdue in announcing the funding awards.   “Communities all over Georgia have shown a tremendous interest in this program, and the competition for these funds was very tough.  These three communities all presented a need and a good business case for their projects and we are happy to be able to make these awards.”

At the Governor’s request, the General Assembly appropriated $1 million in 2007 for the second round of Wireless Communities Georgia grants.  Eight communities applied and were considered for the second round of funding.  In addition to the three award communities, applicant communities included Brunswick, College Park, Griffin, Hiawassee and Kennesaw.

Local governments are responsible for proposing, planning and implementing the wireless projects in their communities.  GTA manages the awards and monitors project implementation.

The available funding represents the second round of grants made available to Georgia communities.  The first round of grants totaling $4 million was awarded in November 2006.  The grant requires a local match of 50 percent from each recipient community.
